Guidelines

A team should consist of at least two and a maximum of 8 people.

The teams work with open data as defined in http://opendefinition.org/ or with data that will attain this status shortly.

All teams will get links where they can access collections of open data.

The team can also work with their own data sets under the following conditions:

  • The team has made the data that is used.
  • The data are freely and legally available.

All tools are allowed under the following conditions:

  • The team has the right to use the tools freely.

The applications developed can be as simple or as complex as desired, the visualizations static or dynamic, interactive or not.

Each team must document their application in this wiki. The documentation must include:

  • Project Title and Description
  • Name of the team and the team members
  • Used data sets and APIs
  • Used software, resources and tools
  • Screenshots or videos of the application
  • Link to the application, if available

Each team presents their work to the others at the end of the event or, if unable to present, the documentation you provide will be summarised.

Infrastructure for presentations will be made available.

The presentation may take up to 5 minutes, and is supplemented by a further two minutes for discussion.

  1. All results produced during the hackathon must be published under a recognized open source license (see opensource.org).
  1. No transfer of rights: everyone retains the rights to anything he or she has created.
  1. Waiver: No one will exercise any rights of exclusivity with respect to information he brings in, even if he otherwise could exercise such right of exclusivity under the law.
  1. Openness Rule: It is our policy that all participants are required to submit results produced during the Hackathon event under open licensing frameworks.
  1. Courtesy: Give credits. Ask if you can, but by default assume to include all those who have somehow contributed to the project.
  1. Where to publish results:

In consultation with the organizing team, well founded exceptions to these rules are possible.

A make.opendata.ch hackday takes at least a day, so that projects can be readily developed on-site (rather than primarily before and after).

make.opendata.ch hackdays are free, the proceeds if any of sponsorship go to the benefit of the Opendata.ch association.

make.opendata.ch hackdays are carried out under the responsibility of Opendata.ch association members. The Executive Committee must be informed of all events.
