4th Swiss Open Cultural Data Hackathon

Our fourth Open Cultural Data Hackathon is taking take place on 26-28 October 2018 at the Swiss National Museum in Zurich – in cooperation with the ETH Library, Zentralbibliothek Zürich, the Swiss Social Archives, the State Archives of the Canton of Zurich, the Basel Historical Museum, Wikimedia CH, infoclio.ch and hopefully further partners and sponsors.

A Pre-Event to our Hackathon was held at the ETH Zurich on 11 September 2018. This event was aimed specifically at students and gave information about the type of data provided at the GLAMhack as well as examples of projects conducted during past editions.

You may own yourself cultural data that you are ready to share. Please look at these infosheets (German / French) on how to share data. If you have further questions, please feel free to contact beat.estermann@openglam.ch.

Registration

If you wish to participate in the hackathon, you must register. This regards data-providers, programmers, designers, artists, experts and so on. If you just want to come by and check out how the hackathon works or attend the project presentations and Swiss GLAMhack Awards on Sunday, you do not need to register.

Online registration is closed, but you can still come directly to our registration desk at the Swiss National Museum.

• Swiss Art Stories on Twitter] ===== What is new compared to earlier editions? ===== For the first time, #GLAMhack is hosted by a museum, and we would like to seize the occasion to encourage more museums to participate as data providers. Furthermore, we are introducing a couple of changes to our hackathon concept: * This year's focus is on creating softwares or artefacts that engage an audience – either online or in form of exhibits/installations. We thereby also encourage the use of non-standard hardware, such as virtual reality equipment and the like – if you have any suggestions in this area, please get in touch! * The two hackathon days are followed by a public project presentation event on Sunday afternoon, where visitors will have the possibility to test the products and to meet their creators. We will also award symbolic prizes to the best projects in several categories. While introducing this competitive element into the hackathon, we would like to preserve the collaborative spirit within the community. We see the awards mainly as an instrument to provide feedback to the teams and to facilitate communication with a larger audience. ===== Swiss GLAMhack Awards ===== The Swiss GLAMhack Awards will take place on Sunday, 28 October from 14h to 16h30. They include a short presentation of the projects developed during the Hackathon as well as the awarding of the jury prizes in several categories and an audience prize. Prizes of symbolic value are awarded taking into account the cooperative and experimental approach of the Hackathon. The project teams formed at the Hackathon decide for themselves whether they want to participate in the competition (project presentation session and award ceremony) or not. Whilst we prefer the presentations be held in English, German and French are also acceptable. **Categories** The jury awards prizes in the following categories (one winning project per category): * **Perfectly made** (for the project that enables the greatest gain in knowledge) * **Stunningly beautiful** (for the project that best highlights one or more open cultural dataset(s)) * **Brand new** (for the most innovative or original project) If there are project teams that have already started their work to a substantial extent in the run-up to the actual Hackathon, an additional prize will be awarded in the category: * **Long-distance runner** The projects that may participate in this category are based on the self-declaration of the teams participating in the hackathon. Photo by Laurent Dubois. ===== Practical Information ===== **How to get to the Swiss National Museum** The Swiss National Museum (also known as Landesmuseum Zürich) is situated next to the Zurich main station (Zürich Hauptbahnhof) and can therefore easily be reached by train. Other means of public transport are the tram and bus: stops "Bahnhofquai/HB" (lines 4, 11, 13, 14, 17, 46) or "Bahnhofplatz" (lines 3, 6, 10, 31). There is no parking for cars at the museum. The closest parkings are: Zürich Main Station (Sihlquai 41), Central (Seilergraben) and Urania (Uraniastrasse 3). Further information can be found on the Swiss National Museum's website.

How to get to the Youth Hostel

The Youth Hostel is situated in Zurich Wollishofen, about 25 minutes from the National Museum by public transports. From the Zurich main station, take a train to the “Wollishofen” stop (lines S4 or S8), followed by a 5-minute walk via Staubstrasse to the youth hostel (sign-posted). Or take the tram line 7 from the stop “Bahnhofstrasse/HB” to “Morgental”, followed by a 5- minute walk to the youth hostel. The youth hostel has a limited number of chargeable car parking spaces.
