Opendata.ch Research Hackdays
Venue & Registration | Get involved | Get Research Data
====== Research Hackdays ====== On June 5 and 6, 2015, Opendata.ch invites researchers and experts, designers, developers, journalists and all people who would like to embrace experimentation with data to participate in our hackdays in Zurich and Lausanne. Open research data from diverse scientific domains will be at the centre of this 2-day creative event, as well as the one big question: how can we get the most out of the huge potential of Open Data in scientific research? With amazing speakers and team leaders, from Bastian Greshake and his open-source genetics network openSNP to biodiversity data with Donat Agosti or black holes and galaxies with Kevin Schawinski, to an engaging panel on Data Ethics, the event's schedule is pointing towards the great potential of open research data. We'll listen, but first and foremost we'll make things happen, putting in two days of intensive work to make data used and useful — all while having a great time together. ====== Projects ====== * Open Food DNA * openSNP (open genetics data) * Genes to Biodiversity (Plazi) * Scattered Windrose * Analyze Cordis data (EU-funded research projects) * SwissPRTR dataset (Pollutant Release Register) * Parliament Impact Project * Discoverability through Structure (Open Data Multisearch) * tumblrverse ====== Coverage ====== Follow our hashtag #makeopendata on twitter. See you at another hackathon soon! ==== Venue & Registration ==== The hackdays took place June 5 & 6 simultanously in Lausanne and Zurich. Our hosts: * FORS, Bâtiment Géopolis, University of Lausanne * ETH Zentrum, Rämistrasse 101, Zurich, rooms HG D 3.1/3.2/3.3 Admission was free. ==== Travel & Accomodation ==== **Lausanne** See FORS - How to find us for travel directions. Or use our Transport API to find a connection by public transport. There is still availability (as of 19.05.) at SwissTechHotel, at 88.- single, 92.- double. Slightly further out but quiet and confortable is the Jeunotel hostel at 69.- for a single room. **Zürich** See ETHZ - Anreise for travel directions. Or use our Transport API to find a connection by public transport. ==== How to get involved ==== In order to be successful, the event needs you to share your data, your programming skills, and your ideas, so: **Come and experience the Hackdays!** First of all, grab a ticket and join us on the 5th and/or 6th of June for two days of fun, innovation and digital brainstorming. It is great if you are a programmer and you are ready to help with your skills, but we are also looking for non-hacking people such as citizen scientists and researchers from various research domains. Start a project, tag it with research, and announce it here! **You can already contribute ideas about ways to use research data** At the hackdays, the institutions supporting the OpenResearchData.ch project (FORS, Digital Humanities Lab, University of Basel, ETH SIS / Swiss Institute of Bioinformatics) together with other producers of research data, their aggregators and publishers, will make particularly interesting data from their respective scientific domains available for further playful, creative or scientific use. The hackdays are not only about data, but also the barriers for effectively reuse of research data: co/ownership, licenses, citation… and many more. Participants will form teams around a topic/challenge, which they would like to discuss/solve – whether making an application re-using data, or drafting a concept about an innovative approach to current conditions. Have a look at the Open Research Data, which we've listed so far. A few days ahead of the hackathon we will update this with a complete list of datasets and experts available on location. **Share your discoveries of research data** Maybe you are aware of interesting research data and topics? In preparation for the hackdays we are putting together a list of links to interesting data. We encourage you to contribute to it by adding new items. Please feel free to contact ordhackdays@opendata.ch, if we can help you to publish and promote your open research data. === Schedule === See detailed schedule for more details on the event program! **9:00+ FRIDAY START** Doors open, help yourself to tea & croissants **13:00** Video sync-up Lausanne/Zürich/virtual participants **-22:00** Evening session finish. **9:00+ SATURDAY RESTART** Doors open, help yourself to coffee & rolls **14:00** Video sync-up Lausanne/Zürich/virtual participants **15:00** Project presentations **-17:00 SATURDAY FINISH** ===== Organizers===== The event is organized by Opendata.ch, with contributions from: |FORS, Lausanne|| | Stefan Büerli, Research Inventory administrator | | Peter Farago, Director | |Digital Humanities Lab of the University of Basel|| | Ivan Subotic, Post Doc| | Lukas Rosenthaler, Head| |ETH SIS|| | Henry Lütcke, Research Informatics| | Chandrasekhar Ramakrishnan, Group Head Scientific Software and Data Management| | Bernd Rinn, Division Head| If you have questions to the organization committee, please contact us here: ordhackdays@opendata.ch.
